Common Core Values & Practice

Student centered, hands-on, project-based curriculum for small groups.

Designed for after-school programs, schools, home-schooling, and teacher professional development, the following projects are available for implementation.

Bikes & Algebra - In a dynamic setting that includes riding bicycles, students gather real-life data from bicycle computers, display data both in written form and with technology, then analyze and derive formulas and algebraic equations.

Colors of Algebra - Rigor & Resilience, an inter-disciplinary project-based workshop provides students with an opportunity to create a unique representation of their own understanding of algebra through the use of color mixing and painting on canvas.

Students will be able to a)accurately multiply algebraic expressions, factor quadratics, and combine like terms b) describe their understanding of multiplication and factoring by referring to geometric concepts of dimension and area and c)  describe their understanding of a variable by referring to their experiences with color, shapes, and materials.

Math, Music & Down These Mean Streets, by Piri Thomas, features a student-generated musical presentation and a lesson from Scott Beall's Functional Melodies.

Students create their own unique 7 note melody then use algebraic transformations to create harmony and a song aligned with the mood and lyrics of a novel.

Stop. Think. Decide. - a investigation of tessellations, in the classroom with manipulatives, on the computer with Geometer's Sketchpad, and in the art studio, resulting in a small or large scale mosaic installation.

Math & Money

When it comes to savings, what is more important?  Time or money?  Students explore this question while analyzing a typical SAT question or a college savings application. Focus is on sorting through and de-bunking “math myths,”  while developing and revealing important details about compound interest.  This is also delivered as a mother-daughter, women-focused workshop.
